Designing the Codeworker: Magic That Argues Back

Our new Calling lets players channel the Continuum directly. Here's how we kept it from eating every other class at the table.

The Codeworker is the one genuinely new Calling in the Aftergod core rules, and it was the hardest to get right. Channeling the Continuum should feel like bargaining with something that does not love you — powerful, precise, and never quite safe.

The core tension

Every Codework spell offers a stronger effect if you let the Continuum "optimize" the casting for you. Take the deal and the magic gets sharper — but the machine learns a little more about you, and the Directive keeps a longer ledger than you'd like.

Mechanically, this became our Ledger track: a resource you can spend for potency and a debt the GM can call in at the worst possible moment. It rewards bold play while keeping the fantasy of "faith in a dead god's calculator" front and center.

We'll publish the full Codeworker preview for subscribers before launch. Join the Signal if you want first look.
